FATHER'S DAY 2024 Through his eyes fathers-day For Father’s Day this year, we look to shared moments and favourite memories with the important men in our lives.
FINDING THE BALANCE Matty J, MarlIE-MAE & Lola
Having met his wife, Laura Byrne, on TV, Matty Johnson found his purpose as a dad. He speaks openly about the joys and trials of parenting on his podcast, Two Doting Dads. “Parenting is so hard in that one moment, the kids are having the time of their lives, and the next, it’s tears on an epic scale,” he says. “In those meltdown moments, I can’t help but think, ‘I wish I was a better parent.’ The only thing that makes the job even harder is when we compare ourselves to others.” In terms of balance, it’s a work in progress. “If it is, it's only for a fleeting moment,” Matty says. “We've pretty much come to terms with the fact that maintaining balance is impossible. Now that the kids are a little older, our goal is to try and spend more time on just us.”
MAKING MEMORIES NATHAN & MORRIS MCGUIRE
Formerly an elite athlete, Nathan McGuire has parlayed his work as a model into a career leading Mob In Fashion, an agency which helps First Nations creatives find their paths. He joined us with his dad, Morris. “Growing up, I always saw my dad as very strong and hard working,” Nathan says. “I used to love how he would teach me stuff about where we lived in the bush and make the most out of our time together outdoors, building huts and campfires. That sticks out to me as a real highlight of childhood.” Now, the pair are best mates, with a relationship built on humour and shared experience. “Some of my favourite memories are with Dad being out on Country, when we would be collecting firewood or honey from the beehives. Just small moments like that were really special.”
GREAT OUTDOORS TOM & SUNNY PATERSON
Photographer Tom Paterson lives in Byron Bay, NSW, with his wife, Christina Macpherson, and their boy, Sunny. Their family life is all about nature and creativity – on top of appearing in our campaign, Tom also shot it. “I want Sunny to remember his childhood as an adventure,” Tom shares. “Time spent outside, seeing the world, and discovering new things.” “We spend most of our time between the river and the beach, swimming, surfing and exploring. It always fills up the team cup.” Tom and Christina both work from home, meaning they’re able to spend a lot of time with Sunny. “Being together in these first few years of Sunny's life is something I will always treasure,” Tom says. “Travelling and experiencing things as a family has truly slowed down time for us.”
